Carnegie Endowment held a round table on the situation in Belarus

On June 18th, Carnegie Endowment for international peace in Washington, D.C hosted a discussion of the current situation in Belarus to honor the memory of Vitaly Silitski. The summary of the event has been recently published on the Carnegie’s website.

Balazs Jarabik, of Kiev-based office of Pact, Inc., introduced the panel. Matthew Rojansky, Deputy Director of Carnegie’s Russia and Eurasia Program moderated the discussion.

Rodger Potocki of the National Endowment for Democracy provided the opening remarks in memory of Vitali Silitski and discussed Vital's main ideas.

Tatiana Kouzina, BISS executive director, presented a general overview of the political situation in Belarus. She also examined Vital Silicki's concept of preemptive authoritarianism that is helpful for understanding the present-day situation in the country.

The presentation Sergej Satsuk of Ezhednevnik concerned the state of Belarusian economy, and Olga Stuzhinskaya of the Office for a Democratic Belarus presented development trends in Belarus's civil society.
